Finding brightness in between South Downs and the sea, Brighton booms on the south coast of England. Beachfront cool radiates from this vibrant and colourful city. Known for its nightlife, restaurants and funky art scene, Brighton claims the title of one of the first great seaside resorts in all of Europe. It is hard to believe the glitzy and sparkling seaside city was once asleep as a tiny fishing town. Visiting the modern sea resort may take some imagination to recall its humble beginnings, but it will splash you in the face with charisma and character.

The trip through bright Brighton begins by admiring the Royal Pavilion. Created by John Nash to serve as George IV’s seaside palace, the Royal Pavilion has become the city’s most famous landmark. The Indian Mogul exterior adorned with minarets and onion domes offers visitors guided tours of its intensely decorated interior. Many credit the Pavilion for making Brighton fashionable and famous.

Getting to know Brighton comes by wandering its streets. The Lanes, as they are called, make up the city’s detailed network of narrow twisted alleys. Shops, pubs and restaurants overflow with holidaymakers. The Lanes represent what Brighton was originally, an old fishing village called Brightonhelmstone. It was here the historical heart of Brighton and that old model lived out life by the sea.

Brighton even bodes well for museum lovers. The Brighton Museum & Art Gallery holds one of Britain’s finest collections of modern decorative design and art. Among the contents, the famous Edward James’ Mae West’s Lips sofa remains inside the museum. Showcasing the sea is more of Brighton’s strong suit. The Brighton Sea Life Centre draws in less artful visitors and more sea oriented travellers. The centre contains marine exhibits amidst Victorian architecture. Sea turtles, sharks, spider crabs and seahorses frolic through the Brighton Sea Life Centre’s waters. The establishment even claims to be the world’s oldest operational aquarium.

With that said, the main attractions in Brighton centre on the sea. The Brighton Marina boasts of being the biggest in all of Europe. A seaside personality screams from the Marina and the Brighton Pier. The Pier seems more old fashioned than new, reminiscent of old English popular seaside culture. Constructed in the 1890s, the Brighton Pier clouds today in rollercoasters and rides. Travellers will even find places selling candy and sweets to satisfy hunger in between all of the fun. The Pier is much like a carnival all rolled into one area.

The concluding draw to Brighton continues the sea theme. Many frequent Brighton throughout summer. Being an easy ride by car from London, travellers can make a pebbled stretch of Brighton’s shoreline their home for a few hours in the sun. This space must be shared for Brighton is so popular in warmer months. If you don’t know sharing you may want to look to quieter English beaches. Once the sun has subsided in Brighton, the city comes alive with a legendary nightlife. Rivalling London and Manchester, this seaside resort knows just how and how late to party.

There is reason to the city’s name. Brighton shines as England’s most vibrant seaside resort. Even the very pebbles on its shoreline seem to glisten more so than the others strung out about the southern English coastline. Be careful of the splashes Brighton makes. They will engulf you in a sweet and salty taste that is strangely hard to deny.
